Resident Rights Statement: The Social Model of Recovery

A well-written resident rights statement is an effective way to implement the social model of recovery within a recovery home.

Having a well-written resident rights statement will:

• Empower residents – an essential component of the social model of recovery
• Promote transparency – allowing residents to freely interact with each other and the recovery house environment
• Set clear expectations – allowing residents to take responsibility for their own environment, knowing that they not only will have their own rights respected, but they are responsible for ensuring others’ rights are upheld
• Protect residents from discrimination – allowing the social model of recovery to be fully implemented

Therefore, a resident rights statement is required for a certified recovery housing program and should be communicated before move-in, preferably at residency application.
