Resident Code of Conduct: Language Exercise, continued

Creating a Resident Code of Conduct for a Recovery House > Resident Code of Conduct: Language Exercise, continued

Statement: “Attendance at weekly house meetings is mandatory.”

Suggestion: Instead of “mandatory” language, empower resident choice with something like, “I agree to attend weekly meetings.”

Statement: “Residents must clean up after themselves.”

Suggestion: Instead of “must,” use less dictatorial verbiage like, “I agree to clean up after myself.”

Statement: “Clients are not permitted to have overnight guests.”

Suggestion: Instead of “not permitted” language, give the resident a sense of community like, “Residents agree not to have overnight guests.”
