It is important that a recovery house has a clear and measurable process for resident applications and evaluations, for many reasons.

First, it helps you implement the social model of recovery throughout your program. By involving current residents of your recovery home in the process of evaluating residents coming into the recovery home, you are ensuring that residents have an active role in the governance of the home. And by having a clear and measurable process that examines a person’s ability to provide support to others, you are ensuring that the recovery home is a place where experiential knowledge is valued and supported.

Also, having a clear, structured and consistent process helps residents fully understand their role within the home and make a good decision about whether your program is right for them. Empowering residents with this information is a critical part of implementing the social model of recovery in the recovery home.
