Resident Application and Move-In Evaluation: Other Considerations
Create an Inclusive Environment
Avoid asking individuals about their LGBTQIA+ status. Allow individuals to choose to live in a home that corresponds with their gender identity.
All residents should be informed during the application process that they must be willing to live with others who are different than they are and respect these differences. If this requirement for inclusion is included in your application process, you do not need to ask people for information about their sexual orientation when applying to move into the home. Although you cannot ask for it, individuals may offer this information to you, and you can ask them how you can best support them and create a safe environment for them.
For more information on how to support LGBTQIA+ individuals, see our guidance, Best Practices for LGBTQ+ Inclusion in Recovery Housing.

Supporting Documents
Consider what supporting documentation you will want to collect to verify the resident’s statements on the application, such as drug screening verification or letters of recommendation.
