Emergency Preparedness: Electricity

Emergency and Disaster Preparedness for Recovery Housing > Emergency Preparedness: Electricity

Extension cords should be used appropriately. Multiple cords should not be used, nor should any cord be used to bring power from one room to another. Additionally, extension cords should not be run under rugs, as this can create a tripping hazard/

Appliances must be used and stored appropriately. Items like toaster ovens, refrigerators, coffee pots or other heated elements should only be in the kitchen. This is not only because of the dangers of heated elements in bedrooms where people keep flammable fabrics like bedding and clothing, but also because of electric capacity. In single family homes, bedrooms are not typically wired to have these types of items running, so running them anyway may cause a fire safety issue.
