Affected Family Members and Substance Use Recovery is a self-paced course that takes an inclusive view of family members impacted by a loved one’s substance use, their diverse needs and goals, and the opportunity for them to play a key role in the recovery movement and to have their own recovery experience regardless of the circumstances. Lessons include: Introduction to Family Recovery, History of Family Recovery, Substance Use Disorder: A Family Disease and Family Recovery Support.
Learning objectives: Upon completion of of this course, participants will be able to:
- Compare and contrast a recovery journey of an affected family member with a person with a substance use issue
- Describe the history of family treatment and recovery across the 19th, 20th and 21st centuries
- Recognize the prevalence of stigma and feelings of shame amongst affected family members
- Describe the shift in family dynamics due to the impact of SUD and recovery from a systems perspective
- Describe family risk factors for developing substance use issues
- Differentiate between various family experiences and identify unique support needs
