How to Avoid Crossing an Ethical Boundary with Employment

“NARR Standard A2g: …ensure the following conditions are met if the residence provider employs, contracts with or enters into a paid work agreement with residents:”

We all know it’s important that those with experiential credentials are important to those we serve in recovery. Those individuals in recovery homes are recovery housing success stories AND are an important resource for others in their own recovery journeys.

So, hiring from within is common.

This NARR Standard ensures that conditions are met if the residence provider employs, contracts with or enters into a paid work agreement with residents.

  1. Paid work arrangements are completely voluntary.
  2. Residents do not suffer consequences for declining work.
  3. Residents who accept paid work are not treated more favorably than residents who do not.
  4. All qualified residents are given equal opportunity for available work.
  5. Paid work for the operator or staff does not impair participating residents’ progress towards their recovery goals.
  6. Paid work is treated the same as any other employment situation.
  7. Work relationships do not negatively affect the recovery environment or morale of the home.
  8. Unsatisfactory work relationships are terminated without recrimination that can impair recovery.
