Ethical Boundaries: Obligation of All Recovery House Operators

Ethical Boundaries in Recovery Housing > Ethical Boundaries: Obligation of All Recovery House Operators

It is the obligation of all recovery house operators and staff to value and respect each resident AND to put each individual’s recovery and needs at the forefront of all decision making.

To meet this obligation, recovery residence owners/operators and staff should adhere to the NARR or ORH Code of Ethics, which has 20 requirements, but we want to highlight three:

  1. Address each resident fairly in all situations
  1. Take appropriate action to stop retribution, intimidation, or any negative consequences that could occur as the result of a grievance or complaint
  1. Maintain clear personal and professional boundaries

It is also important to point out that if you witness an ethical violation, you have a responsibility to report it to the appropriate authority.

What is the “appropriate authority?” If you are staff, report it to your supervisor or director. If the unethical behavior is the supervisor or director, report it to the organization’s governance agency, such as OhioMHAS or ORH.
