Recurrence of Use: Prevention Strategies
Strategies for Preventing Recurrence of Use
Recovery homes can minimize recurrence of use by having effective policies in place to evaluate residents, as well as an effective Code of Conduct and appropriate recovery housing staffing. It is important to include language about recurrence of use in other recovery housing policies.
While all of these policies and procedures are critical, the core of recurrence of use prevention is building quality relationships with and among others in recovery. So, following the Social Model of Recovery is key in preventing recurrence of use.
In the Social Model of Recovery, recovery is enhanced by a belief in a person’s sense of hope for a better future and an ability to assist in and control the recovery process. Recovery is supported by a community of peers willing to share their experiences and to assist the individual on the journey to recovery, essentially becoming part of a functional family.
