Use Universal Precautions

Minor injuries and illnesses happen. Familiarize yourself with universal precautions for handling bodily fluids and provide appropriate supplies, such as gloves, so residents with minor injuries can care for themselves appropriately. Provide a basic first aid kit so residents can have access to bandages and other items to keep such injuries clean.

Take basic steps to prevent others from getting sick. If someone is ill, ask them to cover their coughs and sneezes, and to dispose of any tissues appropriately. Ask them to stay home from work or school, avoid close contact with others, and avoid shaking hands or hugging people until they are feeling better.

Support the resident in getting advice from their health care provider about how to feel better and the steps they can take to help others stay safe.
